Circle of Life: Mandalas

I hope you enjoyed the process of coloring the printed mandala designs in class last week.  Mandalas are important to a variety of cultures, faiths and schools of thought...

You can create some interesting mandalas at this site.  If you click on the asterisks, there is more information about the different elements.

Leave a brief but thoughtful COMMENT on this post answering one or more of these questions:
  • How or why do you think art could be used as therapy?
  • Can you think of other pieces of or types of art that are connected to certain faiths, disciplines or movements?
  • What role does art play in your own life?
  • If you could be any kind of artist, what would you be?  Why?

  1. Art could be used as therapy as a catharsis for pent up emotions. It could be incredibly helpful to people in allowing them to express their feelings and pain rather than keeping it inside. If I could be any kind of artist I would be a painter or a photographer so that I could capture scenes in everyday life and preserve them as a sight for others to see.

  2. If I could be any kind of artist...I would be the artist who never says "if" and never says "I would..." or "I wish..." because it will be and it can and will happen! I'd be the kind of artist who doesn't fit in any category because he doesn't believe in categories, he believes in going outside all of the categories and forming his own category titled "All of the above." I would be the poet, the novelist, the tale-spinner and heart-winner. The story-teller and plot-seller. The creator—and destroyer—of men, and everything in between. I would draw when I felt like depressing everyone with my horrible drawing, and paint when I felt like giving everyone headaches. I'd sew when I'd want to stab myself multiple times, and sculpt when I grew tired of my house. Then I'd write to tell the world with no "if's" or "I wish's" that I'm bored of being a horrible artist and I'd just like to go back to the basics. The poet, the novelist, the tale-spinner and heart-winner...If I could be any ki—hold on. I AM that kind of artist. What am I dreaming about? It's already happened.

  3. Art could be used as therapy in many ways. I know when I was in Art class, I seemed to find painting and ceramics calmed me. It just helped me not focus on everything that stresses me out. I am a perfectionist, so just the thought of focusing on something like that helped me out. From looking at many different art from different artists, one could almost tell how they felt or what they were thinking. If the painting was full of bright, flowery colors or if the art was full of dark, cool colors. I find it kind of interesting that one would use something so internationally known to release everything they are feeling and put it into a work of art.

  4. Art plays a big role in my life by giving me outlets to express my ideas, whether they be good or bad ones.
If I could be any kind of artist, I would be a stage actress. When most people think of artists they limit it to painters, sketchers, and sculptors. They forget about the intense art and talent aspect that people like dancers, singers, potters, weavers, engineers, journalist and so on, need to have in order to be successful.

  5. If I could be any kinds of artist, hands down i would be a graffiti artist. Not the kind who tags, not the kind that everyone thinks about when they think graffiti artist.I would be the kind to do murals in schools and for those who want them outside their building and in their homes or place of business. I would choose this because graffiti is free flow. It allows us to add texture to a bland wall, and blank space. The colors are always vibrant and pop. I believe graffiti is a art that is misunderstood. An art form many who don't know, look at as vandalism. When really it is a way to add life to a dead street, give character to a bland building. Not with tags, but with art

  6. Art can be therapy in whole bunch of ways and I think that's why so many people pursue it. For example, if someone is depressed or sad or feels down than sometimes they have an Outlet that they can use to surpass those bad feelings and if someones feeling overwhelmed by stress than i think do whatever you need to release some of those stressors. For some people that's art and i think that's why are is so special to some people.

  7. My friend Lexi is actually going to school to be an art therapist. Art can be healing because you can create something that is uniquely your own. Nobody else's is quite like it. I think that quality is hard to find in modern times. Creating art is a pretty vulnerable thing. With art, you can say anything without even having to speak.
I would love to pursue watercolor more. I find it so relaxing to just be able to have such a messy and workable medium. Even if you mess up in watercolor, it can just be swept away with your brush. Whenever I'm upset, I paint because I can control what I'm putting on the canvas, and a lot of my "worldly" problems are out of my control, so I guess that bothers me.

  8. Art is awesome because, when you are drawing or painting, or just creating, you can go beyond. You for however long you are creating art, can leave this world and become a part of your own. I draw all of the time, and i do it because it is so therapeutic. I think that whenever i am feeling upset, i can just sit down and leave for a few hours.

  9. Painting can be calming to some people, so I think it can be used as therapy. At the same time I find painting kind of stressful, because I'm worried I will mess up so it is not very therapeutic to me. Art has been used in almost every religion I can think of, for example there are a ton of christian pieces of art from some of the most famous painters in history, like "The Last Supper", the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and the Statue of David.

  11. I think that art can be used as therapy, it helps me all the time. It keeps me sane, and keeps my mind in check. It helps me to express how to feel and what I want in ways that I cannot express in words. I think that art can be used in almost anything, because it can be considered to be almost anything. Art helps me more than I help it. Writing, which I consider to be an art, has given me so much, and I hope to give back to it. It accepts me, always. And that's not something that people can give you. If I could be any kind of artist, I'd be a published writer. Because I want to be able to help people in the way I know best, writing.

  12. After coloring the Mandalas, I found myself getting lost in what I was doing. My hands began working on their own, and my mind wondered. For once, it seemed like my thoughts were organized enough to make sense of. Art Therapy is real, and it is effective. I could see how this would work for people with suppressed memories or emotions or PTSD. Our conscious thoughts mingle with our unconscious thoughts, allowing us to confront our demons and solve our problems.

  13. I found coloring to relieve a lot of stress. It allowed myself to forget about any stressful thing and just let my mind wander. I would recommend it to everyone.

  14. If I could be any kind of artist I would would be a painter. I find that when I am painting I am able to relax and it works as a good way to release stress and anxiety. In addition, it is one of the only forms of art that I can actually do well at and enjoy painting all kinds of things.

  15. I feel like art is a great way for therapy. I think this because you can put everything into art and you can use all your emotions and feelings. It doesn't have to look great, you just have to be passionate about it and it'll work out. All art starts from emotions

  16. Art would be a great form of therapy for many people. It allows people to be creative, and it is also a great way to clear the mind. Art allows people to bring their visions to life, or to create something that has never been done before. It could also serve as an emotional release; a person may put all of their passion into a work of art just to get the thoughts/feelings out of their head, and onto something more tangible. Art is also a good way to clear the mind, and allow you to focus on the important things in life. This could also be a stress-reliever, or a mind-numbing task.

  17. I'm so bummed that I missed the coloring yesterday! I agree however with coloring and art being a form of therapy. I've seen my sister, who is an amazing artist, go into a zone while painting or crafting. Generally, when she isn't feeling good or if she is stressed out, instead of going on to social media or sleeping, she'll go and do art. I haven't been blessed with her talent, but when we colored those mandala's I felt like I was able to check out of the world for a bit and channel my energy into something positive.

  18. if I could be any type of artist I would draw fractal like patterns somewhat like mandalas. I also enjoy mehndi artwork. the art of drawing things like this allows the body to concentrate and relax. I rely enjoy it.

  19. How or why can art be therapy? Just like writing, some people find they can release their emotions through art, when no one else in the world encourages their voice.

  20. when coloring these, I felt so relaxed. it made me think a lot and it helped me come up with smart ideas and solutions to my problems. People make baskets sculptures and writing as their art therapy. some of these come from their cultures. coloring helps me a lot. I love to color and its one of my most favorite things to do. if I could be any type of artist, I would do these mandalas. the artist that drew for us, said that if you mess up, it doesn't matter because theirs already too much going on for anyone to notice.
