As we do some thinking about how what we read inspires or influences what we write, I thought it might be fun for you to check out a website I've seen that analyzes a bit of your own writing and tells you what published author your writing is similar to.
I tried it with one of my blog posts and evidently I write like Dan Brown. I know who that is, but I haven't read any of his books. Interesting. I also found this interesting tidbit which confirmed my suspicions that there wasn't much heft to this particular tool, but hey...
Go to I Write Like and try it yourself.
Go to the ProProfs What Famous Writer Are You? quiz and try that one.
Leave a comment on this post telling us your results (and what you think of them) when you do. You might have to look up the author for more information if you don't recognize the name. The ProProfs quiz said I write like our very own Missouri native Mark Twain. Hmmm...

when I submitted my writing I got Arthur Clarke and to be quite honest I have know valid clue who this is, and judging what he writes he does science fiction mainly and does science themed books. After reading I tidbit about him I think honestly he sounds like a pretty cool author and I might read some of his stuff later on in life, because I dont know if our library has his stuff.
ReplyDeleteI guess I write like Margaret Atwood. Had no idea...

ReplyDeleteI did this multiple times. Each time, I got someone different. I got Issac Asimov, Kurt Vonnegut, James Joyce, Harry Harrison, and David Foster Wallace.
ReplyDeleteI got Stephen King multiple times with paragraphs from different stories. When I took the quiz, I got William Shakespeare. Maybe I'll be famous someday....?

ReplyDeleteWhen I did the "I write like" thing, I got Ray Bradbury and Mario Puzo. When I did the quiz, I got C.S. Lewis! I was really happy about that one because I love his books.
ReplyDeleteI did the quiz and I got Ernest Hemingway, because I'd rather listen to conversation. I take it as a compliment
ReplyDeleteAfter completing the quiz it showed that I write like George Orwell. I'm content with this result.
ReplyDeleteAccording to "I Write Like" I write like poems like Charles Dickens and prose like Stephen King. I would like to think I am somewhat less boring or creepy than those authors, but I guess I'll take it. Charles Dickens was apparently a social critic, and I think that is about the only way I relate to him.
ReplyDeleteWhen I took the quiz, I got Ernest Hemingway. I just looked up a little bit about him and we actually have the same birthday! I have never read his books, but I love F. Scott Fitzgerald's books and they both wrote around the same era and about the same things. He also grew up in Oak Park in Illinois, and one of my old friends grew up there too. I'll have to check him out.

ReplyDeleteWhen I submitted my story, it said I write like Mark Twain. I honestly see no resemblance between our writing styles, although I am a fan of his work. My writing is much darker and gut wrenching to the point were some people could be uncomfortable or made cry. His writing is more adventure and uplifting tales that bring people to a happier state of mind.
ReplyDeleteWhen I took the quiz however, I got Ernest Hemingway. As a writer I feel like I can relate to him. "Perhaps one of your peculiar hobbies is listening to people talk to each other. In any case, it is apparent in your writing that the nuances of dialogue are important to you. Surroundings are also paid special attention to in your stories, thus showing that for you setting is just as important as plot. And you do have good plots. While you may or may not be of a particular faith, there is an underlying theme of good overcoming evil that gives your work special meaning to you. You are a normally introverted person, but your stories are the best way for you to express your thoughts to the world." Is the description left after his name and picture, which I feel, is highly accurate.
Apparently, I write like Margret Mitchell, author of Gone with the Wind. I don’t really understand that, but I’ll take it I guess! When I took the quiz, it concluded that I write like William Shakespeare. I don’t agree with that because our writing is completely different.
ReplyDeleteWhen I took the quiz, it said that I write like C.S. Lewis. While this was surprising, it was also flattering.
ReplyDeleteIt's justification was: "Let's face it. You have opinions, and you aren't afraid to put them on paper. In ways you are a more aggressive writer because of this, but you also have a gentler side that expresses whatever you have to say in an entertaining, inviting way. Your characters and plots are thus very engrossing and cement your reputation as a good fiction author. However, you excel equally at non-fiction."
When I took the "I Write Like" quiz, it said that I wrote like Kurt Vonnegut. I do not know who this is, so I cannot compare our writing. The next quiz told me that I wrote like James Joyce for a couple of reasons. It said that it is not the conclusion that matters, but the presentation of the writing as a whole. The quiz also said that our writing may be different and surreal. I agree with these statements, given that I have always had difficulties writing a conclusion, and I enjoy writing pieces that may be sort of out there.
ReplyDeleteI got Ernest Hemingway from the writing quiz. I don't know much about the guy but I'm happy with the results. Also I took an quote from Hitler's Mein Kampf and put it in the who do I write like website. Apparently he writes like George Orwell.
ReplyDeleteErnest Hemingway from the writing quiz, the quiz said this

On the "I Write Like" website, it said I was like Oscar Wilde, which is of course ridiculous, but it was nice. Oscar Wilde is one of my favorites and one of the greats, so to even vaguely be compared to him is a huge honor.
ReplyDeleteOn the quiz, I got Ernest Hemingway, which is also ridiculous. Still, how can one not be flattered by this? But I know it isn't true, obviously.

I did that "I write like" thing again on another story of mine and I got Dan Brown! I love him a lot too, especially his books the Da Vinci Code and Inferno.
ReplyDeleteFor the "I Write Like" I got Lewis Caroll, so hooray! I like his writing, so if this is true I certainly won't complain. For the author quiz, I got C. S. Lewis, so wooohooo! I love him. Since I love fantasy I can imagine that I may incorporate some of his writing techniques into some of my writing. He invented Aslan and he is totally awesome.
ReplyDeleteI got Chuck Palahniuk for the first one and James Joyce for the second. Never heard of either haha.
ReplyDeleteI got Margret Atwood. To be honest, i have no idea what she has written or who she is. I have heard the name before, but i have no real clue who she is.

ReplyDeleteGood morning,
ReplyDeleteApparently, I write like J. K. Rowling. I'm officially going to start writing. The Harry Potter series is just fine, but it lacks the in-depth, detailed feel I want from proper fantasy novels. J. K. Rowling is a mainstream author, meaning she wrote for the masses. The kind of books that usually become movies.
Have a lovely night,
Zachary
I write like
ReplyDeleteChuck Palahniuk. He is the author of the award-winning novel Fight Club, and i have not read the book, but the movie is pretty awesome!
I write like James Joyce, whom I have never heard of. I don't think I have ever read anything by him but I would be interested in doing so!
ReplyDeleteapparently i write like Jakop Ayrer, a not so popular play writer. i have an odd writing style that reads like a play but i dont care. my writing style makes me speacial.
